In Lithuania, we manage state forests following an entrusting act. We farm there following principles of sustainability and balanced forestry. Since 2004, we have implemented a forest certification programme in accordance with the principles of the international organization FSC® (FSC-C007388) (Forest Stewardship Council®). Forest certification is a process when forestry activities are evaluated in accordance with the totality of set standards. We comply with the long-term FSC criteria in a unit of forest management and we strive to implement the standards, related to FSC.
FSC system
FSC is an independent international system for assessing forest management and labeling the origin of wood products. It provides consumers with the assurance that the offered products are made in strict adherence to the principles of sustainable and balanced forest management.
The FSC system is an objective third-party assessment process. Certification is conducted to evaluate the quality of forest management and ensure that the activities comply with the established FSC principles and criteria. Certificate holders can benefit from selling their forest products as certified, gaining the advantages of ecologically acceptable, socially fair, and economically viable operations.
The FSC principles and criteria form the basis for evaluation to determine whether the forest management of a country, company, or individual is sustainable and balanced. The FSC system has its own label. Producers whose operations are certified according to the FSC system have the right to mark wood or final products made from it with this label.
The FSC certification process can be divided into three major parts: preliminary assessment, main assessment, and annual inspections.
- 1
Preliminary Assessment
During the preliminary assessment, representatives of the certifying company visit the forestry company, review the key regulatory documents and forest and forestry indicators, and provide comments on the upcoming certification process. If significant non-conformities with FSC principles are observed during the preliminary assessment, and the forest manager is not interested in correcting them or seeking a compromise, the certification process is terminated, and the information remains confidential.
- 2
Main Assessment
If no non-conformities are found or they are not significant, the main assessment stage begins. During this stage, the certifying organization’s expert and several hired local experts conduct a detailed analysis of the regulatory documents and the situation at selected work sites and provide conclusions. The conclusions may list deficiencies as well. Once the main deficiencies are corrected, the forest owner or authorized person is granted the certificate.
- 3
Annual Inspections
The FSC certificate is valid for five years. The certifier reserves the right to conduct annual inspections. Selected sites are checked. If a significant non-conformity with the certification standard is observed, the validity of the certificate may be suspended.
