In 2018-2019, various abiotic factors, diseases and forest pests damaged and destroyed specific forest areas in the 5 regional divisions of the State Forestry Agency (Anykščiai, Joniškios, Kuršėnai, Panevėžys and Radviliškios). All these forest areas damaged by natural disasters are at least 0.5 ha in size, and the trees damaged in them accounted for 20 percent. and more. Since the damaged trees could no longer grow in these areas, they were felled in 2018-2019 by clear sanitary felling. The forest needs to be restored in place of the felled stands.
Forest areas to be restored in 2020. in the spring, after preparing the soil and planting seedlings of various tree species. Plantings grown in the state forest nurseries of the State Forestry Authority of VĮ VĮ were used for planting. After the restoration of the forest, it is planned to take care of the forest vegetation: remove the grasses that overshadow the planted trees and the saplings of low-value shrubs and trees.
The goal of the project is to restore the forest in forest areas damaged by natural disasters and cleared. Tree species that meet the conditions of the growing area are planted in accordance with the requirements of the Forest Restoration and Planting Regulations. The planted plantations will form a forest environment, biodiversity will be preserved, soil degradation will be avoided, forest functions and ecosystems will be restored. Restored forest areas will be of high natural value and contribute to carbon dioxide absorption. Restored forests will make forest resources available to society again.
